Mr. Daniel B. Igali
Commissioner for Sports
Hon. Baraladei Daniel Igali is a world-renowned Nigerian-Canadian wrestler, Olympic gold medalist, and prominent public servant. As of February 2026, he continues to serve as the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Bayelsa State under Governor Douye Diri’s “Prosperity Administration”.
Professional & Political Career
Igali transitioned from a legendary athletic career to leadership roles in sports administration and politics:
Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development: He was re-appointed to this role in April 2024 to lead Bayelsa’s sports sector, which has consistently ranked as one of the top three in Nigeria during his tenure.
International Sports Administrator: He is the first Black person elected as a Bureau Member of United World Wrestling (UWW), the global governing body for the sport. Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF): He has served as the long-term President of the NWF, recently emerging as the South-South representative on the federation’s board in September 2025.
Legislative Tenure: He previously served two terms in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, representing Southern Ijaw Constituency III.
Athletic Achievements
Igali is celebrated as one of Canada’s greatest athletes and a Nigerian national hero:
Olympic Gold: Won Canada’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in wrestling at the 2000 Sydney Olympics (69 kg freestyle).
World Champion: Became Canada’s first men’s freestyle wrestling World Champion in 1999.
Collegiate Dominance: At Simon Fraser University, he maintained an unbeaten record of 116 wins and 0 losses, winning three consecutive NAIA National Titles.
Halls of Fame: Inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame (2007), the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame (2012), and the International Wrestling Hall of Fame (2012).
