The International Day of Forest was established on the 21st day of March by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 28th, 2021. Each year, various events are celebrated to raise awareness of importance of all types of Forests for the benefit of current and future generations.
The celebration also involves creating awareness in people regarding the potentials of Forest in the spheres of protection, production, recreation and the major contribution it provides for living organisms.
The theme for the 2021 International Day of Forest is ,”Forest Restoration: A pathway to recovery and well-being”. With evident scenarios of widespread Forest degradation in Bayelsa State,it becomes compelling for us as a state to take this year’s theme as a Clarion call for action to conserve our forests.
Presently they are six (6) proposed Forest Reserves in the state Viz:
1. Taylor Creek Forest Reserve
2. Edumanom Forest Reserve
3. Apoi Creek Forest Reserve
4. Nun River Forest Reserve
5. Igbedi Creek Forest Reserve
6. Ikebiri Creek Forest Reserve
However, these proposed Forest reserves has not been constituted. I therefore, use this occasion to plead with His Excellency to set in motion the process for the constitution of four (4) Forest reserves in the state. It is noteworthy that the federal Government has signified intention to upgrade conservation of Apoi Creek Forest Reserve and the Edumanon Forest Reserve…
